Face Kicking

Our baby has been moving around a lot these days. While it’s so exciting earlier on in the pregnancy, and it’s still amazing now, some nights I do wish he would settle down a bit. Apparently he will soon as he gets too big to move around as much and moves downwards ready for birth.

Hugh will put his face up to my belly and get him to kick his face, a trick that hopefully the baby won’t do later!

Hugh’s new fame?

I was joking with Hugh about this because he has been collecting all the articles about this. So far there has been about 60 to 70 articles from all around the world. He has meticulously been putting links and titles into a word document and also Google translated the titles. Some of the titles end up being quite funny, so we will make a video about that soon.

Because there are still articles every day and he is still checking for them,  I’ve been jokingly warning him about what will happen when they stop. I imagine he will have withdrawal symptoms and told him it would be like that Hollywood trope of how far someone falls from fame.

I enjoy teasing him about his new found fame. But the attention is very motivating and gives him that extra drive to continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle. His confidence has grown a lot and he is starting to think about whether he will study nutrition or something that can be included in his life coaching goals. He has always wanted to help and inspire people and with this project he really managed to achieve that.

But it’s been an amazing experience. We never imagined that it would get this much attention. Western media focused a lot on the IVF aspect while Asian media focused on how he looked afterwards.

That main transformation video is approaching a million views too. Which is a first for us!

It’s about a month since Hugh did his big photo shoot and he is doing well with his lifestyle change. His goal is not to always have  6 pack of course, but to maintain a healthy weight and continue exercising. From now he may focus on building more muscle as well.

We plan to talk about IVF later, after the baby is born. We did vlog while going through IVF, so we’ll have a video about our journey. Make sure you are subscribed to YouTube to see that.

How to compliment your pregnant wife

How to compliment your pregnant wife.

At least his made me laugh! We were on our way to do our weekly radio show and even in the morning it’s so hot in Seoul right now. I just feel sweaty and huge in the heat. Perhaps because I was wearing white, Hugh compared me to an angel… but soon made it weird by saying he would ride me if I was!

I can’t wait for summer to be over. I’ve heard older people talk about how summer never used to be this hot (thanks global warming) and it seems like August is the most miserable month. I love summer in Australia, but not Korea. The humidity is the killer here. I’m also glad I’m not in my final month of pregnancy in August. It will be cooler when I’m at the end of the pregnancy.

IN OTHER NEWS:

The latest Nicholalala webtoon episode is up on WEBTOONS! You can check it out there. Nicholalala is my other comic series which is a scrolling webtoon. Set in the Korean countryside with characters loosely based on us, and lots of Korean folklore characters.

There is an article about us on the Huff Post about Hugh’s transformation video!

What happens during pregnancy

Since I’m quite large now I’ve been wondering where my stomach actually is.  Mostly I was wondering about my stomach as that’s the organ you are more aware of when not pregnant. There are some gifs and videos online about how the organs move when pregnant and it can be horrifying! I’ve been needing to pee so much lately and when I saw how much the bladder is squished it makes a lot of sense!

I’ve felt okay for most of my pregnancy. But the past few days have been hard in the insane heat and humidity in Seoul. I stay at home most of the time as even getting down the stairs to outside is hard in the heat. I don’t go outside unless I absolutely have to. Can’t wait until summer is over!

The baby has been moving a lot more these days and you can actually see movement while watching my belly carefully. It’s been very exciting for us. But it is a very strange thing being pregnant, and even talking to my friends who are mothers a lot beforehand, nothing really prepares you for it.

If you google about how women’s bodies change during pregnancy you’ll see the gifs and videos and be shocked too! It’s weird not knowing exactly where my organs are. And have a look at what happens to the intestines! Ridiculous!

If you are wondering if I’m prepared for having a baby…. no I’m not. I’ve barely bought anything! At least everyone has been telling me that you don’t need as much stuff as you think. But I can’t believe there will be an actual baby here in November.

This is my most recent belly photo:

If you are wondering if it’s a boy or girl, we have filmed a video announcing that, and it will be up in the next few days. Make sure you are subscribed on YouTube to see that video.

HUGH’S TRANSFORMATION!

Hey guys, Hugh here.

I hope you enjoy this video. I really wanted to share it with you guys. I made many promises that I’m going to do and I didn’t continue but this time I really wanted to show that I can do it.

I chose to do this over 6 months so it would be a whole lifestyle change. Eating habits and exercise, change so many things. At first, I changed eating habits and did regular working out, at least 3 times a week. So many people asked me ‘what is the secret?’ There is no secret, just keep doing it.

Having a trainer is a good thing but you are the one who should have a passionate to achieve your goals. The trainer is helping you out but if you are not ready you won’t have a great result.

This wasn’t an easy journey but it was worth it. Not only losing weight but getting healthy has so many benefits. I now have confidence with my appearance. When I go shopping I can buy so many clothes. Before I had to wear XL or XXL but now I can get small or medium size.

I do exercise regularly, even though I finished my project because it’s my habit now. It’s my daily routine. I also have motivation when I look at the before and after photos. Knowing I could do it. I never thought I could change my body type to be lean like this.

The biggest thing is being healthy because when I was chubby I had more problems with my skin because I ate so much unhealthy food and drank a lot. It also caused problems with throat and nose. My stamina was terrible so I couldn’t run, and I had knee problems. I had a bigger body but weaker than now. I have a smaller body but stronger than before.

I want to do something for my wife and baby, so they can be proud of their father and husband. I still have some more goals like running a marathon and doing a backflip and other tricking moves.

Getting the photoshoot is not the end, just documenting it. It reminds me that I can have a body like that so I can have more motivation to make that body again. Thank you for supporting me. If you have a health problem because of weight, I want to recommend you to start doing something now. Make good habits. Because sometimes “later”, becomes “never”. I did it, you can too.

This was amazing! Book Signing Experience

The Book Signing

Thank you everyone who came out on Saturday! It was amazing! We didn’t know how many people would come, especially in the rainy weather, but we were overwhelmed at the turn out. We actually ran out of time, we only had a certain amount of time for the signing at the front of the Kyobo store. For the last few people we had to go inside the store to another room to finish signing and chatting with people.

Thank you everyone who wrote us notes as well! We read them all later and were so thankful and happy. The book also made it to the bestsellers of new releases table for this Kyobo store, which is great! It means it’s easier for people to see in the store, and that’s because of everyone who came and bought the book on Saturday.

Many people have been asking about an English version, but there won’t be an English version of this book exactly. There are English translations next to the comics, so it can be read by an English speaker but there is still a lot of Korean in it. Most of the comics in the book have previously been on the blog in English. The comics and the set up of the book is for the Korean audience, so if we release an English book it will be a different angle and different comics. But maybe in the future!

If you are in Korea and you could like to buy it you can buy from Kyobo book stores or order online here.

If you are not in Korea it will soon be available through the ‘Talk to Me in Korean’ online store. We will update when it’s available.

Once again a big thank you to everyone who came out to the signing event. It was very overwhelming but awesome! It was also lovely to see so many intercultural couples and families there as well. We hope our book also helps challenge negative perceptions about multiculturalism in Korea and educates people about intercultural families.

The footage was filmed by Yoojin Kwon, Hugh’s trainer and business partner and distant relative haha.

There is always someone weirder

There is always someone weirder than you.

Because of the recent rain there were a lot of worms that had come above ground. I found a huge one that was still alive so I picked it up. Hugh was absolutely disgusted so of course I chased after him with it. If he didn’t have such a strong reaction I wouldn’t do it to him! The cicadas are also out at the moment and very loud. I wanted to find a cicada shell or a live cicada just to freak Hugh out. Right after he scolded me for even mentioning that a group of boys rode past on their bikes. One of them shouted, “I want to eat a cicada!”

That’s way more weird than me just playing with worms and insects! I know people can eat crickets, but do people eat cicadas anywhere?

The cicadas in Korea sound slightly different to the ones in Australia. I think they are a higher pitch. I’ve often heard people say they find the ones here in Korea to be more irritating. They will still try to pee on you like the ones in Australia though.

I will continue to gross out Hugh with stuff though. He grew up in the countryside! He used to catch frogs and snakes and bugs when he was young! I don’t understand his aversion now. He just says, “It’s different now”. It’s been a long time since he has touched them, but for me it was somewhat recently that I was doing a zoo keeping course that sometimes involves insects, either as exhibits or food for other animals.

I wonder if that kid actually found a cicada to eat…

The ‘My Korean’ Husband’ book is available from today! It is available in Kyobo book stores and online here. This books is in Korean, but there are English captions for the comics. It is not yet available internationally yet, as it is for the Korean market, but we will update you when it’s available internationally online.
