Shoelaces

Those Shoes

We were walking out of the apartment we were staying at in Seoul when Hugh proudly proclaimed that he wasn’t going to tie up his shoes laces. He didn’t care at all. But within one second he was tying them up muttering, “Just a bit”. His responsible adult side won out. Hugh is at this stage where he wants to wear the younger guys’ fashions but then also worries about things like shoelaces. He goes out in Hongdae a lot, but then at times is annoyed at all the young people. He sees old friends from school or military who now look so old, while he looks quite similar to how he did when he was younger. It’s an interesting time trying to work out identity. We’ll have to see if his fashion changes when we move completely to Seoul later.

 

Hand me that

Hand me that

In Korean culture it’s polite to give things to people with 2 hands, or with the other hand supporting your arm. It’s especially important to do that with someone older than you or if they are in a higher position.

Being married, we don’t need to always give things with 2 hands (though some people who have a more formal marriage may still always do it) so it was funny that Hugh did it by reflex when he was concentrating too much on something else but still didn’t actually look at me.

Within a marriage you can also do it on purpose to show respect or care but is not necessary all the time. Also because I’m not Korean and our marriage is a cross cultural marriage, we are changing between 2 different cultures constantly.

 

Why is the book not published yet?

You might be wondering why the comic book is not published yet.

I stressed in the video that it’s a book in Korean for the Korean audience because I don’t want people to be disappointed about it not being in English. If you don’t know Korean you still can read the book because there will be English subtitles next to comics, but it’s not set up for English speakers. Many of the comics are ones that have already been on the blog too.

Stupid

Stupid

Well at least he feels better about himself! He burnt himself because he was eating in the Korean style of just eating right out of the pot.

Our conversation can change dramatically where one minute we are being sickly sweet and lovey dovey and the next we’ll be like, “You are stupid!” “No, you are stupid!” Always just for fun though.
