Farm Work in Korea

On the weekend I noticed a lot of farm work was being done. There were a lot more people in the fields and I soon discovered that in order for the onion crops to be harvested family, friends and other workers are called in to help. We rode our bikes around and filmed some of the onion harvesting and some other farm work being done. We didn’t want to shove the camera in people’s faces so we mostly filmed at a distance.

Things that have also changed since our last countryside video: the concrete channels besides the fields have been cleaned out and now flow with water, wheat has been harvested and rice is now being planted in those fields, strawberry plants are left to die, potatoes are in season and being harvested, chilli plants are being grown, and kiwifruits are getting bigger but not full size yet.

Picking Onions

My parents-in-law like to send produce from the farm to others, so they allow us to send some to friends in Seoul. However, every time we do it they make us send so much! Last time we sent rice… and it was a 20 kilo bag…

Loud

Loud

So loud! Too bad if there really was a problem and I was like “Oh it’s just the taekwondo kids” and then the roof caves in on me.

I put a photo on Instagram a little while ago of the kids after their lessons playing by the river.

Why I’m Tired

Why I'm Tired

And that’s why there isn’t a proper comic. I have to work on other stuff today and because I slept later than usual I didn’t have time to make a comic.

It is always a shock to hear loud messages blasted all through the village, especially at 5am. I can’t imagine that happening in Australia because I think Australia has much stricter noise rules.

Seriously…. 5am. I’m assuming the person went and picked up their delivery of fish finally.

I did hear my mother-in-law wake up at that time and didn’t seem worried so I assumed everything was fine and it wasn’t a message saying we were all going to die.

Springtime in Korean Countryside

These are all places that I ride my bike around regularly. Although I have discovered a lot of stuff, I never knew I could go into these historical houses. I always assumed they were private property. Now I’ve realised that I can if I want to! I usually ride around by myself but when my husband can be persuaded to join me, he does have a lot of fun too.

The old tree is said to cry the night before someone dies… which is kinda creepy! The countryside looks so pretty now, it’s such a change from how desolate it looked during winter. It’s quite nice down by the river now, but as I mentioned in the previous blog post, I’m not allowed to go swimming there.

We also managed to briefly film 2 cranes in the rice field. It’s quite cool to see a pair like that because they mate for life.

Hope you guys enjoyed that video. Let us know if there is something in particular you would like to see in the Korean countryside.

SO MANY TADPOLES!

We were actually filming us riding bikes around the countryside when we decided to go down near the river and discovered a billion tadpoles! So we decided to make a quick video because they thought it was so cool.

Jam

jam (800x800)

I feel bad for the rejected strawberries that just get made into jam! The good quality strawberries get packed nicely and shipped off to department stores.

It is coming to the end of strawberry season. It’s so warm now that we can’t send strawberries through the post like we did before. During colder months it is easy to send boxes of strawberries overnight to friends, but not now. We will still be growing strawberries for a little longer but they will all be jam strawberries. Anyone can pick jam strawberries as well because it doesn’t matter if they get crushed.
