Moving next week!

In this video we talk about finding somewhere to live in Seoul and moving next week! We looked at a bunch of places and the best place ended up being in Hapjeong, which is a really cool place to live. Very hipster now. While Hongdae has the night life and clubs and that more commercialized type of vibe now, Hapjeong has cool cafes and bakeries and small venues for musicians. We are very close to the Han river and in a residential area, as well as being weirdly close to YG, which is interesting considering how much I like and always mention YG artists.

As we said in the video, our deposit seems huge but is actually on the lower end in Korea. You are just expected to put down these huge deposits for places, and in some cases, the bigger deposit you have, the less rent you actually pay. People borrow money from the bank, or parents or save up for these deposits. What we are paying monthly for rent is very cheap compared to Sydney. While Koreans might say our rent is expensive, for us it’s a pretty good price. The place is small, of course, but it’s a good space and we like the layout. You’ll see it in a house tour video later.

We are really excited to move to Seoul! We can’t wait to make videos about all the stuff we are doing in Seoul and the area we’ll be living in. Stay tuned!

In Hongdae

Hongdae

The ongoing theme with Hugh! He either gets annoyed at people speaking banmal (informal language) with him because they think he is young, or he is happy about it… because they think he is young. This time the guy spoke banmal to Hugh because he thought he was his friend, and that’s fine between friends of the same age. By the way, Hongdae is a cool area where all the university kids hang out. (Great food there too).

He also spends half his time in Hongdae enjoying that he fits in fashion wise with his youthful looks and the other half of the time being annoyed at young people. Anyone who frequents Hongdae knows the Hongdae ‘uniform’ at the moment: those Timberland type shoes, a bomber jacket and hair either styled up in the 2 block cut or down in the ‘lego’ hair.

Being in your 30’s is a strange time. Not a young person but not yet an ahjussi.

(This happened on the weekend and Hugh couldn’t wait to tell me that someone mistook him for a friend that is a decade younger).

Seoul Day Trip with SeoulSarang for hotels.com

Not long ago we filmed with Sara from the YouTube channel SeoulSarang for the Korean hotels.com. We had a busy and fun-filled day in Seoul together where we were shown lots of the attractions in Seoul. They filmed us during the day and we both wrote articles for the magazine.

You can check out their video on the site here, or down below.

We also made a video about the day:

Make sure you check out Sara’s video as well. Although she is Australian, she makes her videos in Korean (with English subs). She is amazing! I’m really glad that I got to film with her.

LINE FRIENDS CAFE AND STORE (AND WEBTOON)

We didn’t plan this but we happened to come across the LINE Friends Cafe and Store while in Seoul. It’s sooooo cute! Everything is so cute!

I was particularly excited to see the webtoon merchandise and got The Sound of Your Heart stuff. Webtoons started in Korea, one of the biggest sites being Naver Webtoons. The international site is Line Webtoon, which is what my webtoon Nicholalala is on. It’s so much of an honour to have my webtoon on a site that also has some of the biggest webtoons like The Sound of Your Heart on it.

Address:
535-15, Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul
서울특별시 강남구 신사동 535-15

On a side note: you might have noticed a quick shot of a woman with bandages on her face. Hugh edited this video and left that in because this store is located in an area that has the best plastic surgery hospitals and it’s not unusual to see people walking around like that.

Pics from Seoul

We had a whirlwind trip to Seoul. SBS PopAsia were in town secretly filming stuff so we caught up with them. Hugh went a day before me because I still had some work to do.

Here are the pics that we posted on social media:

Hugh caught up with the JJCC boys:

We met Sam Hammington (Aussie comedian famous in Korea) at his awesome cafe.

All the guys that do stuff on SBS PopAsia: Hugh with Andy (Host) and Prince Mak and Peter who both do radio shows.

SBS POPASIA

SBS PopAsia are based in Australia and are the best digital radio station for Asian pop internationally (and of course if you live in Australia there is the TV show). You can download the app! They call me once a week to chat about Kpop and Korea. You may remember the vlog where we visited them in Australia.
